Passion for the melody

Mr Priyajit Ghosh is not your usual nine to fiver who pursues his passion on the weekends.  A senior technology project manager in a health-tech company, and a professional singer who has also performed in Radio as well as TV channels.  He is the founding member and leader of Team Fusion, a band of singers comprising of Priyajit’s family and friends who have performed for National Arts Council, the Bengali Association Singapore, Singathon and having the honour to be invited to perform at the Istana Open House not only once but three times. This year’s Istana Open House on Deepavali marks Team Fusion’s 4th time being invited to perform at the Istana celebrations.

Born in Kolkata, Priyajit has travelled the world before his family and him finally settled in sunny Singapore in 2010. The 38-year-old has not only carved an impressive professional career, he also finds the time to volunteer for movements like Team Nila and organisations like People’s Association, Singapore Cancer Society and Bengali Association Singapore. This is on top of finding the time to spend quality time with his family.

Priyajit’s son, Pranay, won his first singing competition in the “World of Kidz” singing competition held by CSC at Tessensohn clubhouse back in 2018. Since then, Priyajit has been encouraging Pranay’s interest in singing by featuring him prominently in the band since 2020. The rest of his band members are also made up of equally talented individuals – Devarti Ghosh and Manasi Roy, both of whom have won singing competitions in India and have experiences in the music industry.  Occasionally the band will also rope in guest musicians and singers to perform together, something that Priyajit says they are always happy to do.

Performance at the Istana

Music is said to have the power to create a sense of belonging and mutual understanding between people.  And this is one philosophy that Priyajit believes in and stands by. For this year’s performance at the Istana, Team Fusion will perform a repertoire of 23 songs in 7 different languages (Bengali, English, Hindi, Mandarin, Punjabi, Tamil and Urdu), which also includes a rendition of “Shine Your Light” which was the theme song for National Day Parade 2023 and one of Priyajit’s personal favourite songs.  The title of their performance set is also aptly titled “Musical Regale” to reflect what these songs mean to the celebration of Deepavali.

When asked how the band managed to book the performance at the Istana, Priyajit revealed that they were scouted by the Istana management team.  Their debut performance in 2018 was so well received, they were invited again in 2019 where their show, titled “Shankar Symphonies”, was cited as one of the highlights of the open house and impressed former President, Madam Halimah Yacob, so much that she shared their group photograph on her Facebook page.

Community spirit

Musical talent aside, it is obvious that Priyajit cares for people and wants to connect with the community.  This is most evident in his volunteer work as well as him becoming a member of Civil Service Club. A member since 2021, Priyajit says that what attracted him to join the club was the chance to connect with other members and learn about Singapore through interacting with its locals.

“Moreover, the facilities they have are a great way to unwind with family members.  I personally use the swimming pool and bowling” he mused.  Not only do the activities at the club allow him to spend time with his family, the facilities at the clubhouse are what keeps him mentally and physically well.

Besides singing, Priyajit also writes poetry and composes music.  He is proud to have composed a song for an NGO in India during the COVID pandemic, relaying hope and healing through music.

A bright future filled with music

So what does the future hold for Priyajit and Team Fusion?  For one, he hopes to release his own album and be able to have an intimate concert performance at the CSC Auditorium for “audiences that are passionate about music”.  The intimate setting and state-of-the-art sound system at the CSC auditorium is sure to be a draw for performers looking for an ideal venue to host their concerts and performances. Next, he hopes to fulfil more offers to perform at corporate events and gain more experiences as a band.
