Sentosa’s scenic Palawan Beach turned into a buzzing sporting arena as Public Service Officers from across agencies came together on 28 June for the highly anticipated Public Service Beach Games 2025. Undeterred by the blazing midday sun — and even a surprise thunderstorm — participants gave it their all in three adrenaline-pumping events: Beach Volleyball, Beach Captain’s Ball and Beach Touch Rugby.

The event was indeed a thrilling display of fitness, grit and camaraderie. The CSC extends its appreciation to Guest-of-Honour (GOH) Mr Dennis Lui, CSC EXCO Member, for gracing the event and presenting awards to the winning teams.

Beach Volleyball: big wins and breakthrough moments

In one of the most hotly contested categories, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) claimed the Overall Beach Volleyball Championship title after a hard-fought win over long-time rivals Ministry of Defence (MINDEF), in the Men’s Beach Volleyball category.

MHA team manager Mr Li Kun Han shared that while there were a few strategic hiccups, his players gave it their all. “There are definitely areas for improvement, like stamina and overall fitness — which are especially important for playing on sand. We could also have coordinated better and supported each other more effectively,” he said.

The team trained twice a week in the lead-up to the event, focusing not just on fitness but also on strengthening team spirit. “The casual, light-hearted beach atmosphere makes it easy for us to relax and have fun.”

A standout moment came from the Land Transport Authority (LTA), who emerged as first-time champions in the Women’s Beach Volleyball category — a landmark win for the team led by captain Ms Goh Wei Ling.

LTA faced one of the tournament’s strongest contenders in the finals: the women’s team from MINDEF. “We’re very happy with our win because we lost to them earlier in the playoffs. But we came back stronger and beat them in the finals,” Ms Goh shared proudly.

For Nanyang Technological University (NTU), this year’s games highlighted the tactical differences between playing indoors and on the beach. “We usually play court volleyball, so we had to adapt quickly,” said NTU’s Mr Kashyapa Naren Athreyas. “Even though the sand cushions your falls, it takes a lot more energy to jump or run. Still, we did our best against stronger and more experienced opponents. If only we had a sand court near home to practise on!”

Beach Captain’s Ball: sharp passes and strong connections

In a thrilling comeback, the Ministry of Education (MOE) reclaimed their spot at the top of the Beach Captain’s Ball podium, after narrowly missing out on the title last year. With slick passes and sharp coordination, MOE proved they were back in top form. “We were more composed and ready this year, and we had a better game plan,” said team captain Mr Jason Goh. “Everyone worked together with one goal — to win back the title. But beyond that, it was a great opportunity to bond with colleagues I’ve worked with for over a decade.”

MINDEF, last year’s champions, came in second — followed by strong showings from the Ministry of Sustainability and Environment and Urban Redevelopment Authority.

A highlight of this year’s category was the debut appearance of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), proudly fielding their first Beach Captain’s Ball team. Despite the challenges of playing on sand, the team displayed remarkable grit and enthusiasm. “Playing on the sand was definitely a challenge, but we powered through and had lots of fun,” said team captain Ms Aw Ee Ling.

Her advice for first-time participants? “Come prepared, bring lots of water — and enjoy yourself!”

Beach Touch Rugby: sandy terrain and serious grit

It was a fierce showdown in the sand as MINDEF reclaimed their crown in Beach Touch Rugby, toppling last year’s champions, MOE. Represented by the Singapore Armed Forces Sports (SAFSA) Association, the MINDEF team came in focused and fired up. “This year, walking away with the championship trophy was not only a year-long promise fulfilled, but a testament to the team’s dedication and determination to come back stronger,” said Lieutenant Colonel Derrick Ng, coach of the SAFSA team.

The team’s preparation began in January, with weekly Thursday training sessions running through to June. Still, the beach setting posed physical challenges. “Some of our players faced extreme fatigue and cramps despite our regular training,” said LTC Ng. “We’ll definitely look at ways to help them acclimatise better to the heat and sand.”

For LTC Ng, the games are more than just a competition. “I’ve always enjoyed being out in the sun and having a good time with friends, so the Public Service Beach Games offer the best of both worlds — sport and camaraderie.”

That spirit was felt throughout the day. With energy high and teamwork on full display, the Public Service Beach Games 2025 was a resounding success. Whether competing on the sand or cheering from the sidelines, participants left with lasting memories — and plenty of reasons to look forward to next year’s edition.
