Christmas often evokes a kaleidoscope of memories — moments of joy, togetherness and sometimes bittersweet reflection. At the cosmic-themed CSC Children’s Christmas Party, participants paused amid the festive buzz to reflect on their most poignant Christmas memories, underscoring the deeper meaning of the holiday.
Held at the Galaxy Ballroom at CSC @ Tessensohn, the event was a lively spectacle of spacesuits, alien costumes and intergalactic fun. But beneath the glitter and games, attendees shared stories that were as warm as they were meaningful.
The gift that came with snow
CSC Chief Executive Charlie Ng congratulates Mr Ian Laird and his family, whose out-of-this-world costumes won them the event’s Best Dressed prize and free movie tickets.
For Mr Ian Laird, Christmas has always been about reconnecting with loved ones over good food and meaningful moments. He attended the party with his wife and five-year-old daughter, all dressed in matching alien and astronaut costumes. The family, regulars at CSC’s Bukit Batok branch, was thrilled to win the Best Dressed prize for their creative outfits.
But it was a childhood Christmas in Scotland that left an indelible mark on Mr Laird. “I remember getting a bike for Christmas, but I cried for two weeks because I couldn’t use it as the snow was too deep,” he shared with a grin. “I’ll always remember that!”
Becky the Bunny, the beloved mascot of MSF’s Families for Life programme, charmed children and parents alike, with many eagerly lining up for photos with the adorable crowd favourite.
As an adult today, the holiday for him is more about reconnecting with friends and family he hasn’t seen in a long time. “It’s all about having good food and seeing the people that you love,” he said.
A letter that lingers
Many a photo opportunity for parents to create memories of their young ones.
Nearby, Ms Nabilah Yusman and her four-year-old son experienced their first CSC Christmas celebration, thanks to the club’s partnership with Comlink+, an initiative by the Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) to uplift lower-income families.
Ms Yusman reflected on a cherished holiday memory — exchanging gifts with her former colleagues and revelling in the festivities. “We expressed our appreciation of each other and, of course, the gift exchanging was the best part!” she exclaimed.
But her most treasured memory was a letter from a dear friend who passed away not long after. “He wrote me telling me what he loved about me,” Ms Yusman shared. “I felt truly appreciated at that point.” Though bittersweet, the memory reminds her of the power of simple acts of connection.
Ms Nabilah Yusman and her young son enjoyed their first CSC Christmas celebration, creating sharing special moments together at the party.
At the party, she shared her hopes for creating new memories with her son. “We came here so he could enjoy his Christmas, socialise and know why we celebrate,” she added. “It’s also about knowing the purpose and values behind the different holiday celebrations!”
Balloons, smiles and joy
For professional balloon sculptor Joseph Tan, Christmas is a season for giving back. He recalled how, during his university days, he volunteered at a Christmas celebration for children living in Whampoa’s rental flats. “I was just starting on my balloon sculpture journey and could only make simple sculptures back then,” he said. “But it brought so many smiles to the group and made me fall in love with what I do!”
The experience stayed with him and inspired him to continue volunteering at Christmas events for underprivileged children almost every year. “It really warms our hearts when we get to interact with the young ones,” he shared. “Just a brief few minutes with each child brings us a great sense of happiness. We see their delightful smiles — even from some adults — when they receive the special sculpture.”
As the party came to a close, it was the memories shared that lingered most. Mr Laird’s story of a snowy Scottish Christmas, Ms Nabilah’s bittersweet letter from a late friend and Mr Tan’s joy in bringing smiles to children spoke to the heart of the season. Christmas is about the moments and connections that leave a lasting mark, long after the decorations are packed away.
