Discover the thrill of stand-up paddleboarding — a calming, versatile adventure perfect for all ages and even your furry friends!
Picture this: gliding across serene waters, standing tall on a paddleboard, and feeling the sea breeze on your face. That’s stand-up paddleboarding (SUP), an activity that brings you as close to “walking on water” as it gets. Originating in Hawaii, this laidback sport lets you balance on a stable, wide board while exploring coastal waters at your own pace.
SUP is ideal for all ages, even older adults, thanks to its gentle, low-impact nature. With a wide, stable surface, paddleboarding is an easy balance exercise, offering a full-body workout that’s enjoyable and scenic. SUP lets you connect with nature like no other water sport, bringing you face-to-face with the elements at a slower, more relaxing pace.
Want to try it out? Singapore’s calm coastal waters provide the perfect playground for an SUP experience that strengthens your body, sharpens your balance, and — if you’re up for it — even lets you master a few yoga moves!
Catch the SUP wave
Stand-up paddleboarding isn’t just for celebrities like Taylor Swift or Lewis Hamilton. At Ohana Beach House at CSC @ Loyang, Adventure Paddlers offers an Introduction to Stand Up Paddle Boarding class for newcomers, complete with all the gear. Once you’re on the board, you’ll find that it’s surprisingly easy to stand and start paddling with just a bit of practice.
To get moving, there are three basic paddle strokes: forward, reverse and sweep. While it’s tempting to look down, remember to keep your eyes on the horizon — it helps you maintain balance and keeps your posture steady. And don’t rely on arm strength alone; paddleboarding engages your core, helping you paddle more effectively and avoid tiring quickly.
Alongside these fundamentals, the Adventure Paddlers class will guide you in safely recovering from falls and returning to shore, all under the watchful eye of an instructor.
Bring your dog along for the ride
Why leave your furry friend behind? SUP is a perfect dog-friendly activity that can strengthen your bond in a fun, active way. At Adventure Paddlers, the SUP With Dogs class let’s you and your dog hit the water together, giving both of you a fresh challenge as you balance in sync. For dogs, SUP offers a great leg and core workout, making it ideal for older pups, too.
Worried about safety? Dog lifejackets with a back handle make it easy to lift your pooch back on board if they go for a swim. It’s best not to leash your dog to avoid tangling. What you can do is attach the leash to their lifejacket rather than their collar and stand at opposite ends of the board. Adding a traction pad or trimming your dog’s paw fur and nails can also help with grip.
A tip for those with larger dogs: as you approach the shore, kneel down and steady yourself a bit sooner than expected — excited pups often jump off early to hit the beach, dig or roll in the sand, which can throw you off balance too
Mix up your SUP experience
Once you’re comfortable on the board, there’s no limit to what you can do. SUP Yoga, for example, offers a unique way to practice balance and breathwork in nature. For competitive paddleboarders, SUP can shift from a relaxed cruise to a high-energy race.
