After a three-year hiatus, CSC Stars made its comeback on 11 January 2025 at CSC @ Tessensohn’s Auditorium. This year’s competition is a little different as it welcomed CSC members and Public Service Officers to showcase their talents, vying for the grand prize and the coveted title of top performer.

The contestants captivated the audience with their vibrant performances, ranging from singing to line dancing and ukulele playing. The esteemed panel of judges included Ms Angelina Lek, a singer and seasoned emcee, and Ms Ivy Lee.

The grand prize winner was Mr Soon Junjie (above), a CSC member and Public Service Officer, who belted “It’s a Long Story” by his favourite Mandopop artist Phil Chang. His rendition of the song’s emotionally charged lyrics and challenging high notes won him $200 worth of Takashimaya vouchers and the admiration of the audience.
Singing has always been a passion for Mr Soon. “I love going for karaoke sessions with my friends and they liked my vocals. So they encouraged me to try out singing competitions,” he shared.
Beyond the thrill of performing, Mr Soon views singing competitions as a way to build his confidence and improve his communication skills. “I’m naturally an introvert, but my job requires me to be more extroverted. Such competitions help me work on presenting myself to the public,” he said.
Reflecting on the judges’ feedback, Mr Soon plans to refine his stage presence and attire for future competitions. “Winning has left me excited and motivated to do better,” he added.

The second prize went to Ms Amy Cheung and her team of eight line dancers (above), who dazzled the audience with their synchronised routine. Dressed in red shrugs and black dresses accessorised with sparkly scarves, the troupe performed to remixes of popular songs, including “Always Remember Us This Way” by Lady Gaga.
This was the group’s first live performance, and their journey to CSC Stars 2025 began in a spontaneous way. Ms Cheung, a CSC member, met their dance instructor, Ms Betty Toh, at a gardening meetup in Bukit Gombak six years ago. Ms Cheung invited Ms Toh to teach her friends line dancing, and the group has been growing ever since.
“There are about 18 of us now, and we practice once or twice a week at HDB void decks or public spaces,” said Ms Cheung. Their choice of red outfits coincided with the Lunar New Year festivities. “Red is always a nice colour!” added Ms Toh.
For the group, the competition wasn’t just about winning. “We wanted to step out of our comfort zones. We didn’t expect to win — it was all about having fun and trying something new!” says Ms Cheung.

For fourth-place winner, Ms Sandy Tay (above), the competition marked her return to the stage after a long hiatus. Singing a heartfelt tune by homegrown talent Kit Chan, Ms Tay’s performance was a triumphant comeback.
“Many competitions for my age group (over 40) were cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s also hard to find contests for middle-aged adults — they’re either for younger talents or seniors. So, it feels good to be back,” she said.
A seasoned performer, Ms Tay has been competing since her secondary school days. Her love for singing began during casual karaoke sessions, and while she admits her vocals were stronger in the past, she continues to enjoy showcasing her talent. “The best part of singing for a live audience is engaging with them and building confidence — it takes a lot of practice!” said Ms Tay.

As CSC Stars takes its place as a beloved tradition, it’s clear that this talent competition is about more than just winning — it’s about bringing people together, stepping out of comfort zones and creating memories that last a lifetime.
