There's something incredibly special about the bond between humans and their pets. To celebrate this connection, the Civil Service Club (CSC) teamed up with pet magazine and community platform, Clubpets, on 25 and 26 May 2024 to host Summer Pet Mania. This weekend extravaganza was tailor-made for pet owners and their beloved furkids, offering a variety of pet-friendly activities that left everyone delighted.

Here was how the organisers made the event so unforgettable:

A Spot-on Location

Summer Pet Mania took place at the centrally located CSC @ Tessensohn, making it super easy to get there. And with ample parking space, animal lovers from all over the city flocked to join the fun.

The CSC @ Tessensohn sports hall was a perfect venue, providing a cool and comfortable environment away from the heat and humidity. CSC member Mr Ronnie Seah, his wife and their 10-year-old poodle Bubbles certainly appreciated the refreshing change from the usual outdoor events. “It is more relaxed and cooler here with the fans on high speed,” said Mr Seah.

The Right Retail Mix

Summer Pet Mania featured a wide variety of vendor booths, offering plenty of choices for visitors. Mr Seah was especially pleased to find hard-to-find pet food brands. “Bubbles can only eat soft foods, so it’s great to see his favourite brand Moochie available here,” he said.

With over 40 booths selling an array of pet products like shampoos, accessories, treats and clothing, it was hard to resist shopping till you drop for your furry friend.

Audience Participation

It wasn’t just the humans having all the fun at Summer Pet Mania — pets got their moment in the spotlight too. There were friendly competitions where pets could show off their special talents and finesse, celebrating the bond between human and animal.

In the Gold Digger contest, dogs were judged on how many treats they could sniff out from a bouquet-shaped chew toy within a set time. The first prize went to the excitable yet well-trained Dino.

Dino’s proud owner, Ms Ednajoy Ngo, couldn’t have been happier with his win. For his tenacity, Dino bagged a pet goodie bag filled with toys and treats. “We like bringing him out for competitions and whenever he wins some treats, we’d share them with his doggy friends,” said Ms Ngo, a long-time CSC member. “We’d also match the cash value of his treat prize and donate to animal welfare organisations.”

A celebrity in local pet circles and an ambassador for pet adoption, four-year-old Dino is a border-collie cross adopted from a litter of puppies. He regularly attends pet events to promote adoption and entertain people with his many tricks.

Bonding Moments

Pommy Wong, a seven-year-old Pomeranian, took home the Best Dressed Contest award. Both Pommy and her pawrent, Ms Josephine Lim, fully embraced the Summer Hawaiian Theme’s tropical vibes, showing up in matching Hawaiian shirts. Pommy stole the show with a hand-crocheted hula skirt, a hat, flowery garlands and a pair of mini sunglasses. “Whether it is Christmas, Halloween or National Day, whatever the occasion, we will dress accordingly,” exclaimed Mdm Lim.

Shared activities are key to making a pet day out memorable. At Summer Pet Mania, pet owners learnt how to create lasting memories of their furkids at the DIY Shadow Box Paw Print Workshop. They crafted and framed clay prints of their dogs’ paws, capturing the essence of their mutual love and friendship.

Fresh and Unique Content

Pet owners also discovered how alternative therapies could boost their pets’ physical well-being. On the first day of the event, Dr Dawn Wong from Bluewater Vet explained how regular acupuncture treatments can speed up healing and promote relaxation in animals. The second day featured Dr Sara Lam from RehabVet, who discussed how Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment can enhance pet health and manage chronic ailments.

Pet-tastic Prizes

To make an awesome event even more awesome, visitors got the chance to win the grand prize of the spin-the-wheel lucky draw — a coveted stay at a Dog-Friendly Sea View Bungalow at CSC @ Loyang.

CSC @ Loyang is home to 38 chalets, including four dog-friendly units, providing a respite away from busy city life. The clubhouse also offers a range of facilities, such as a swimming pool, a children’s playroom and a multi-purpose court, as well as various watersports for members to enjoy.

Ms Arabella Flores was the winner of the villa stay. The first-time guest at CSC looked forward to some quality time with her two-year-old West Highland Terrier, Missy.” I will also bring my family along to enjoy the stay,” she added.
